In “green” architecture there is the aspect of the healthy house. When designing for health we follow the precepts as championed by Paula Baker-Laporte and Robert Laporte:

§ Separate the living space from car fumes § Create a space to take off shoes at the front door § Include accessible and appealing outdoor spaces to facilitate a connection with nature and its rhythms § Provide proper ventilation § Plan and design a house layout for safe electrical installations § Include drains where a water source might leak and cause damage § Separate the living space from by-products of combustion § Consider the site’s geobiology and the preservation of natural magnetic fields § Incorporate natural light, illumination and color § Consider architectural proportioning and the harmonic order of space § Minimize man-made electromagnetic fields § Provide acoustical protection from noise pollution § Respect the sociological structures of family and the larger community

We consider green building practices as we program, plan and design the house by way of site orientation, heat chimneys, biomimicry, etc.

We see the “green” approach to architecture as being much more than the selection of materials and finishes… it is a philosophy. We realize we are one with nature. There is an integral relationship we must be cognizant of. We do not have dominance over nature. Everything has a life force and is interconnected. There are invisible relationships between objects like the silence between musical notes. We understand that nature is our ally and we approach projects with a high degree of responsibility and humility. we have learned from the traditional, indigenous way of building that it is a reciprocal relationship. The term “wilderness” is foreign to indigenous peoples. Knowledge is not understanding. We are interested in the story of place. It is a continual dialog about the process, which goes on forever. It is about conservation and regeneration – a “whole system” mind set. A house is an islands in the stream – receiving and giving back. Whole is a derivative of holy. Architecture is a spiritual practice. I am first human, then an architect.
