DurableToys.com is an internet retailer specializing in toys for active play, non-violent dramatic play things and family recreational and leisure products. It is the web domain of Needak, Inc., a North Carolina Corporation founded in 1988. Needak, Inc. began as a company that soley provided information systems and database consulting services and transitioned to ecommerce when the internet emerged as a retail channel.

DurableToys.com, originally known as Needak.com, began with a product line that included Amish made pull wagons, Kettler tricycles and pedal cars, and cast metal pedal tractors and farm/construction scale models. Relationships were soon added with Radio Flyer and Roadmaster. Over time new manufacturers and product lines have been added. Some have been lost as well due to product discontinuations, manufacturer changes that did not align with the DurableToys.com philosophy (i.e. outsourcing that negatively affected quality), or the discovery of a replacement provider that better served the discriminating toy and leisure buyer. USA manufacturers, such as Jonti-Craft, are a welcome addition to the DurableToys.com lineup.

DurableToys.com is a business that is family owned and operated and has abided, to this day, to a product selection rule that considers the creativity, durability and true play/leisure value in a product. In 1995 the owners' daughter was assaulted on the playground of her school by a boy who was emulating a scene from "Power Rangers". This attack crystalized the non-violent theme in toys that came to be a dominant part of DurableToys.com. Gifts purchased for their own family members, including a USA-made metal pedal tractor and a beautiful Amish made wooden wagon with air tires, also became a basis for the types of products sought out by the owners and offered for sale.

An interest in the kind of toys enjoyed at home and the new popularity of the internet as a shopping venue intersected in early 1996. The name "Needle in a Haystack Durable Toys" was chosen to reflect the unusual nature of many items as well as their durability. A logo was created with a haystack and gambrel roof barn with silos along with two little farmers, interleaved with the words "Needle in a Haystack Durable Toys". The latest logos have "DurableToys.com" in a much larger font than "Needle in a Haystack" or without the latter phrase present at all.

Although the DurableToys.com web site has maintained a rustic interface, its attractions continue to be the superior technical discussions and product descriptions that far exceed most competitors in detail and advisory notes. The owners' backgrounds in engineering and the sciences gives the presentation a credence that shines through. In a catalog shopping model, without the benefit of "tire kicking" on site, clear discussion with technical substance is one way to give a prospective customer the confidence to consummate the sale.

The product line of DurableToys.com has expanded beyond children's toys to include family recreational and leisure products including high end patio furnishings, exercise gear and instant shade solutions.
