hi5 - Who's in?

Hi5.jpg

With over 50 million members around the world, Hi5 is one of the largest and fastest growing social networking websites around. The website has gained much acclaim as an excellent venue for meeting new friends and keeping in touch with old ones, especially among young people in their teens and twenties who comprise the bulk of Hi5’s users.

How It Works

New members begin by creating a profile online. They provide basic personal information that Hi5 requires and upload their photos.

Once done, a user is now ready to meet new people by sending out friend requests to other users that capture his fancy. These users may either accept or decline the friend request or block the user from ever contacting them again. If a user accepts another user’s friend request, the two of them become "connected" in the first degree. Connected users appear on each other's friend list or network.

A member's network consists of three types of friends: their 1st degree friends or direct friends, their 2nd degree friends or the friends of their direct friends and their 3rd degree friends or the friends of the friends of their direct friends. The member can contact anyone in his personal network, whether they are 1st degree of 3rd degree friends.

As a security measure, members can choose to allow only people in their network to view their profile or allow anyone on the Hi5 website to view their profile.

Basic features

Like most social networking sites, Hi5 offers the following basic features:

1. Messaging - all members can send messages to their fellow members

2. Bulletin Boards - all members may post messages via bulletins, which are blanket messages that are forwarded to all their 1st degree friends

3. Groups -- all members have the option to join various groups in Hi5, especially those groups whose members share their particular location, hobbies, interests or points of view. A list of a member's groups appears on his profile.

4. Journals -- all members have access to their archive of past posts. Their profile's main page features the member's latest post as well as a link to all his previous posts.

Additional features

1. Video – Members can upload videos to their profiles (still in beta testing)

2. Music – Members can upload up to 15 songs through the Hi5 Musicplayer that enables them to purchase songs in five genres (Hip-Hop, R&B, Electronic, Rock and Reggaeton) from REAL or iTunes. Musicians can also upload their own songs on Hi5.
