As its name suggests, ICQ or "I Seek You" is an instant messaging computer program that lets people find and communicate with other people from all around. ICQ enables users to make new friends or communicate with old friends, family members, colleagues and others. The first ICQ program was released in November 1996.
How It Works
First, a new user has to install the ICQ program. He must then register at a server that is connected to a host of other servers that span the Internet. Upon registration, users are given a unique ICQ number as well as the option to add their personal data to their ICQ number. The ICQ number is what allows other users to recognize you when you log onto the ICQ network.
Registered members can put together a directory of their friends and contacts on ICQ. When a member logs into ICQ, the program informs everyone in the member's directory that he or she has just logged on. It also instantly informs members when anyone in their directory logs off.
One good thing about ICQ is that it can sit silently in the background even as users work on other applications in their computer.
Basic Features
Sending instant messages is the most common means of communication on ICQ. With ICQ, users can send and receive instant messages in real time. Once someone sends you a message, the message instantly pops up on your screen. Meanwhile, if a contact is not logged onto ICQ, you can still reach him through other modes of communications such as email, phone, SMS and wireless pager messages.
ICQ also allows users to transfer files or URLs and chat via audio or video. Through the web-based ICQ2Go, users can still chat with their contacts even when they do not have access to their personal computer where their profile is installed.
Other Features
ICQ5 allows users to personalize and customize their ICQ to suit their needs. They may choose to display their photo or any of ICQ’s animated devils when they send out messages. Users can also add special shortcuts to their favorite features so that these can be accessed directly from ICQ. For instance, an ICQ member can simply send to his friends or colleagues video sessions, greeting cards and invitations to games directly from his ICQ message window.
ICQphone provides special IP functions that allow users to undertake PC-to-PC or PC-to-phone calls. There is also a multiple-user mode that allows groups to have a conference or engage in multi-player games online.
In a nutshell, ICQ provides access to the most widely used methods of communication in a simple and easy way.
