BITS Limited, Saving Energy Made Easy
BITS Limited makes energy saving technology for consumers and businesses. We're best known as the source of the Smart Strip, inventing an entirely new class of consumer products, known and reported in the media as smart power strips: widgets that do intelligent things with your power supply to save you energy and better protect your equipment than a standard surge protector does, in creative and 'smart' ways. Since that's pretty close to our trademarked name for our product, it would be fair to say that we've been given the same treatment that Google has on our name. That's not something we can do much about, but it's ok. We make the best designed ones by far and our market share shows it, so it's not really an issue. "Smart Strip", however, will now and forever mean our product when referring to an electrical device.
BITS started as a partnership between Russell and Bruce Barton, to design, service and maintain large-scale medical equipment. As electrical engineers and passionate environmentalists, they made up neat tricks to improve power efficiency and cut loads as they went about their business. It didn't take long before customers were specifically requesting these power saving methods in their own equipment. Eventually, it was clear that there was a huge demand for intelligent power-sensing and switching widgets; but going from custom-tailored, high-end and BIG electrical systems versus engineering for low cost consumers is a big leap. It took years before a working prototype for the Smart Strip was made that was worthy of mass-production, and there are a lot of under-the-hood innovations that each strip carries to this day--mostly patented now, of course.
BITS operates mostly out of Tampa Bay, in Florida. Day-to-day operations are run by a team of employees down here. Russell and Bruce still live and work in Northport, NY, but spend a large part of their time traveling nationwide to shows and businesses promoting our products.
The company has a vested interest in the green movement; we support numerous charities and organizations, and have a company policy of paying full wages for employees that volunteer their time in environmental efforts.
