Founded in 2000 by Kent Lewis, Anvil is a search engine marketing company specializing in keyword research, search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC) management. The origins of Anvil can be traced back to 1996, when Kent Lewis created a free weekly email newsletter covering the Internet industry. Anvil evolved over the years into a monthly ezine "unencumbered by relevance" that is less self-promotional and more of a creative outlet. After leaving an agency he helped co-found in 1999, Lewis decided to hang a shingle of his own and elected to stick with a name that had built-in equity.

The SEM agency and the ezine are still going strong, but Lewis needed more stimuli. In 2000, he founded pdxMindShare, a filtered-networking event focusing on creating meaningful professional connections. Lewis has also been an adjunct professor at Portland State University for the past few years and sits on multiple industry organization boards.
