Before the fabulously popular Comedy Central ahow: The Colbert Report, Adbusters, a semi-popular magazine, was often a way folks get introduced to the concepts of Culture Jamming. The musical group Negativland is also known for its work in this field. The Billboard Liberation Front is well known in some cirles for its guerrilla art through billboard alteration. The Yes Men are known for their performance art.

This form of activism is considered free speech and is well known in vaious subcultures as a spin off of advertising that is generally thought of as an activity that challenges intellectual property and the normalicy of modern life. This activity takes on many humorous forms, such as: hoaxes, spoofs and satire. Here is a good essay on the subject from the good folks over at the University of Washington.
