O'Reilly Media, Inc.

O'Reilly Media spreads the knowledge of innovators through its books, online services, magazine, and conferences. Since 1978, O'Reilly has been a chronicler and catalyst of leading-edge development, homing in on the technology trends that really matter and spurring their adoption by amplifying "faint signals" from the alpha geeks who are creating the future (Note: this is contested -- see below). An active participant in the technology community, the company has a long history of advocacy, meme-making, and evangelism.

Publisher of the iconic "animal books" for software developers, creator of the first commercial website (GNN), organizer of the summit meeting that gave the open source software movement its name, and prime instigator of the DIY revolution through its Make magazine, O'Reilly continues to concoct new ways to connect people with the information they need. O'Reilly conferences and summits bring alpha geeks and forward-thinking business leaders together to shape the revolutionary ideas that spark new industries. Long the information source of choice for technologists, the company now also delivers the knowledge of expert early adopters to everyday computer users. Whether it's delivered in print, online, or in person, everything O'Reilly produces reflects the company's unshakeable belief in the power of information to spur innovation.

ORIGINAL COMMENT:

It is with great regret that I must report that Mr. O'Reilly himself has censored my comments posted to radar.oreilly during the web 2.0 conference. In our email interchanges over the past two days he has vacillated between allowing my remarks to be be posted and/or not posted, sometimes removing portions and/or links to my own website. He has now called me "deceptive" and presumably purports to protect his readership from what he claims to be deceptive practices. I deceived neither him nor his readers -- the vast majority of the readership or radar.oreilly presumably were never able to see my comments in the first place. I was not aware that his readership needed to have ANY protection -- let alone such arbitrary value judgments as Mr. O'Reilly has made. I am very sad to report this, because I feel Mr. O'Reilly also has some quite good ideas -- however, I strongly feel that such ARBITRARY censorship is a BAD idea. :(

All of my remarks over the past two days have now been deleted. One example of a post from which comments were deleted can be found here: http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2007/10/web2summit_the.html

addendum: it is, perhaps, noteworthy that Mr. O'Reilly based his censorship solely on the domain name I gave as my own domain name. He did not criticize my comments per se, nor my own website -- the only basis for Mr. O'Reilly's censorship was the domain name itself. He noted in particular that he felt that a domain name from India (.IN) was confusing to him. This seems odd -- since India is one of the fastest growing technology markets across the globe. I imagine that people in India would be quite surprised if/when they find out that Mr. O'Reilly thinks so little of the .IN space.

REPLY:

Mr. O'Reilly is the most down to earth CEO that I've ever met. His opinion of how _HIS_ forum should be run is a completely up to him. How do _YOU_ moderate his beliefs? I think this message clearly states that you value your censorship of Mr. O'Reilly's actions rather highly and that you contradict yourself by stating, "ARBITRARY censorship is a BAD idea. :(". Please, for the sanity of the rest of this audience, put more thought into your messages/flames.

REPLY:

I do not feel that PERSONAL attacks are appropriate here -- let's stay focused on the management of oreilly.com website. Please report whatever experiences you may have had WRT censorship on oreilly.com (or if you have no experience in this regard, then please report anything else about how the is managed). Note that aboutus.org is (AFAIK) not about personal character but rather about domains and/or the websites built at particular domain name addresses (and/or the management of those web sites). I hope that focusing on topics that are appropriate to this forum will help to bring about more useful results for the aboutus.org audience. I look forward to more useful participation! :)
