SpeakingBuddy.org is a product helping teach children to read, write and do math.
Overview
SpeakingBuddy.org (ICSS™ certified | labelled with ICRA™ | rated by SafeSurf™ | read more...) is a website built to promote the SpeakingBuddy!, a free educational software developed to help teach children, motivating them to improve their reading, writing and basic maths skills.
From the author's own words:
- The SpeakingBuddy! software is a project I developed primarily for my wife, who is a special needs teacher. I was often trying to find a way to apply my programming knowledge in some sort of software that could help with her work at school, so I thought "... why not develop something that could entertain the children and at the same time helping them to learn? ..." read more
Software features
The SpeakingBuddy! software uses Text-To-Speech and funny animated characters, along with many other useful features, in a very simple and easy-to-use interface.
- The StoryPad! window is a simple, built-in text-editor, in which the children can compose and/or edit their own stories, also having the animated characters reading the texts for them before they save it. The window also have a words list below the text editor, so the children can add words they commonly use, which will be available for other stories they will write. read more...
- The BasicMaths! is a 'big numbers' calculator with the four operations, where they can make basic calculations, also having the animated characters helping on the tasks. For the multiplication, the BasicMaths! also offers the tables from 0 to 10. read more...
- The BadWordFilter! feature prevents any word not suitable for children to be copied, written or read in any part of the program. read more...

Languages
- Both the SpeakingBuddy! software and website are in English language.
- For the SpeakingBuddy! software, the Text-To-Speech feature offers two options for English accents (British and American), by installing the appropriate TTS engine on the computer.

They deserve the traffic and the publicity. the AboutUs page is pretty, simple, clean, and easy to read as well, which goes to one of the points of the software.
