== Cannot get contact info, to ask for help ==

page shows up with a thousand Domain names instead of contact info.

I want some of my private info removed from your site, was shocked it was on a wiki, and registered to do so.

I am having huge spam problems, this site might be contriubting to it.

In fact, your about us page shows up with the thousand domain names, several others do too.

Your showing of private info might be why someone decided to hack you.

So what if other sites do it. Doesn't mean you should too without owners permission, unless you do mean harm.

these spammers are email terrorists. get worse everyday. Any site that helps them are terrorists too.

there's your suggestion.

: ''We cleaned up your information off the [[wiki]] page.  Do know that information is public and we think that [[SecurityThroughObscurity]] is not security.  As for helping spammers, we have made it nearly impossible for spammers to harvest emails from this site with the instructions here at [[ProtectEmail]], which happens automatically.  Let me know if you have any questions. Best, [[MarkDilley]]''

:: I found my name, prior address and phone number - thankfully all outdated. I deleted them anyway. And added a comment to the edit info for that change. Hope that's allowable and remains clean. I know this stuff is already public, but it's not normally available in a simple [[Google]] search, and although it is security through obscurity, that is a perfectly acceptable form of "limiting" the potential for unwanted discovery. Any half decent security expert will advocate security through obscurity as a useful part of any systematic approach to security - it might be a minimal contributor, but it A contributor in some form. I wonder how many spammers scan this site digging for data?

== process improvement ==

A process problem for new people: Somebody puts a note or message in my own talk section. I then respond to this person in my own talk section via the “edit” command, rather than placing my reply in this other person’s talk section. (I was told this is the proper procedure by some familiar with aboutus).

This still leaves me wondering, when I so edit my own talk page, by adding this reply, will the other person know it – does he or she get some type of automatic message that I have made a reply to their comment (placed in my talk section)? I think for new people, this process could be more clearly explained.[[MartinPfahler]]

: ''Hi [[MartinPfahler]] ,  I generally leave comments on a persons talk page rather than my own!  That way it alerts the person that there is a message for them.  It is a bit of a disrupted conversation that way, but I personally think it works better. What way do you think it will work for you? (What, there are differing opinions at [[AboutUs]]?!!?! ;-)  Best, [[MarkDilley]]''

Mark, I think any way will work, its just to know what standard all people agree to use. Currently it seems there is no standard -  which might cause confusion for new people. Perhaps to mention this "how to" issue in the aboutus tour or navigation section? Note Ted's related posting in today's "community" section.[[MartinPfahler]]

== process improvement ==

When people give suggestions about process issues, etc., it might help to set up some way to track these suggestions over time. For example a person might come back in a week, to see if their suggestion has resulted in a relevant change. Over time, if people don’t get this type of feedback, they tend to lose interest in giving suggestions. Some tracking feedback might be nothing more than, “our back end Techies have noted your suggestion but it is tough one to code, and it is currently way down our priority list, so it is unlikely to be implemented for at least six months” – which at least gives the suggestor some idea of the current status of their suggestion.  [[MartinPfahler]]

== For profit ==

Why don't you use the aboutus.com domain (which is yours) if you are a for profit organization?

Or at least be very explicit about this, for a .org wiki is easily associated with non-profit.

Marco

: ''Hi Marco, we use .org because we are a for proit organization interested in organizing information and people.  We have tried to make it clear that we are for profit on our [[AboutUs]] page.  If you have suggestions, that would be well recieved. Best, [[MarkDilley]]''

== Domains ==

For some reason this site seems to auto generate information about www.domain.tld if you enter domain.tld.  But these are two different domain names.  There can be different sites behind.  Also when one enters thirdlevel.domain.tld, it seems to generate information from www.domain.tld (again, not domain.tld which would be a logical choice if you would only whish to list second level domains).  A suggestion is to first try domain.tld and if that does not exist, fall back to www.domain.tld.

Marco

:* Hello Marco.  www.domain.tld and domain.tld are  the same things, unlesss you talking about something else.  As for second level domains we are working on it but not come up with an automated solution yet. --[[User:Simon Koldyk|Simon]] | <small>[[User talk:Simon Koldyk|talk]]</small> 16:51, 27 March 2007 (PDT)

I noticed that no one has yet made an [[AboutUs.org]] search plugin for [http://www.mozilla.org/ Mozilla] and [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ Firefox]. I tried to make one but had no luck using the generator at the Mycroft project, perhaps someone else would be better at it. I would love to be able to search Mozilla from my browser. ==Mini Site Map==

I was working on a page ([[STVAction.org.uk]]) and decided to add a Mini Site Map.  I have set up a draft template for others to use if they wish though I am sure it can be improved.

If people think this is a good idea please help improve the template.  I assume it would be possible for the BOT to generate a mini site map from pages linked to frequently on the site and pages with titles such as home, index, faq, contact, about etc.

== International Country Codes ==

International Country Codes are used as categories at [[YelloWikis.org]]. Can I suggest that such a categorisation might be useful here.

It might be possible to use the domain name extension of a site to categorise it e.g. "thisisanexample.co.uk" :

*[[:category:GB]] (international country codes for uk)

*[[:category:com]] (for commerce)

*[[:category:.co.uk]] (to categorise by domain extension)

Links:

*[[User:John_Cross/International_Country_Codes]]

*[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_code Country code from wikipedia]

I would find it useful to be able to search all the ".gov.uk" sites for example.

Let me know what you think.

== Problem with thumbnail update? ==

Is there a problem with thumbnail update at domaintools? When you click "Que thumbnail for update" the text changes to "Thumbnail qued for update" but nothing happens. I have qued mine for update something like three days ago, but it still the same, from 2004, and the site has changed a lot since then.

:''The thumnbnail update does not happen immediately. It could take a while. This help file says that the update should happen in less than an hour, although it could take longer. As I said, I have queued mine a few days ago, and I think that I have tried again even earlier, perhaps a few months back, but the thumbnail still shows my site as it was in 2004. Perhaps you should check to make sure the feature works.

: ''Hi, I just saw that feature work yesterday.. so give it some time, maybe a day?  Let us know what happens.  Best, MarkDilley''

:You may also wish to read [[UpdateThumbnail|this]]; it has information that's most relevant. —&nbsp;[[User:Nathan|<span style="color:#3971DE">'''Nathan'''</span>]] ([[User talk:Nathan|<span style="color:#3971DE">'''talk'''</span>]]) / <em>21:29, 7 May 2007 (UTC)</em>

OK, today is May 9, and the thumbnail is still the same (a correction though, it's not from 2004, it's from 2006). That's two days. As I said, I am almost certain that I had also tried to update it a few months back, and it didn't work, but anyway, if you say that the feature works but it just takes more time, I'll wait.

May 11, thumbnail not updated yet 4 days after I queued it. (I'll be updating this from time to time.)

May 13, and the thumbnail remains the same. There ''must'' be a problem. Could you look into it please? My site is [[Visual-Physics.com|here]].

May 19, the thumbnail is still the same. Anybody?

May 21, thumbnail the same. Nathan?

==Buy this domain==

I find it BOTH misleading and slimey to allow NetworkSolutions.com to run a link on nearly every domain you list offering to "Buy this Domain". NONE of our domains are currently listed for sale  - this link is misleading and deceptive for the average web user. This nonesense should NOT be allowed on your site. {{Unsigned|24.213.243.224}}

: ''Maybe it would be better to say, Make an offer on this domamin.  I don't personally understand why it is so upsetting, as the person who owns the domain, you would have final say about whether or not you would want to take the offer.  Can you explain to me more why it upsetts you? Dear friends,

We are listening to and looking at the program of Bayless Conley for several years. Every week we look forward to Sunday-morning 8.30 a.m.

We are blessed and build up by his message. But.....some time ago you have placed an enormous monitor on the platform with wild rolling, blue clouds (?) Why.....?

Does such a talented preacher need such a digital unrest?

We experience it as very disturbing and annoying and it leads away from the preachrer and the message.

Is that really necessarily?

Please, will you put away that monitor from the platform?

We love you all and feel connected with the Cottonwood congregation!

May God bless you abundantly!

I wrote you several days ago asking for you to do something about this. You have mixed my domain with another company. I do not want to continue monitoring your site, so please remove my info completely and permanantely.

If I have to put more energy into this to get you to take action it will be in the form of a lawsuit or slamming you in any way I can find.

Why do I have to get ugly to get you to respond???

: Please let us know what you'd like fixed.  Of course you can also do it yourself and we'd be more than happy to help.  You can leave a message here, by e-mail or in our IRC chat room.  I just looked at [[PrecisionPour.com]] and it does seem to redirect to another site.  But if you own the domain then I'd guess that's what you want it to do?

Hi,

I am the owner of Amelox Incorporated.

I found us listed on the AboutUs site many times as AmelOx.

Please!  We are not an Ox, but Amelox.

Could you please change that?

Thank you,

If they don't let you put a "contact us" link in place why not state that the company doesn't want to be bothered by the people that buy their software?

I'd like to see an option on each domain page whereby owners can:

*opt to re-send the bot to their sites immediately to extract it's most recent information;

*define the max amount of text (perhaps in character count) to extract, and followed by a "read more" link;

*specify an updates interval/frequency to tell the bot how often the site is updated.

With blogs, news sites, etc., these get updated frequently. I think the above would allow AboutUS to have the most up-to-date information possible if the bot could re-visit any site that chooses to allow it. --[[Robert]] | <small>[[User talk:Robert|talk]]</small>

Change the main page's meta tag to be "AboutUs Domain Directory" instead of "Main Page - About Us" so that's what shows up when anyone adds this to their Favorites.

=== Refresh thumbnail ===

Although it looks like you take the thumbnails from a third party, there should be some way to refresh the thumbnails or at least ask for such a refresh to be scheduled. One of my domains has this problems as it was not yet configured, but a thumbnail was already taken. Thanks. --[[User:Assarbad|Assarbad]] 01:22, 1 September 2006 (PDT)

=== Declare owner ===

One really nice feature would be to link a wiki account to domain pages. This way you spare the concern I raised above (about re-sending the bot), since it is sure the owner does a certain action.

I do not know how this could be achieved best, but there should be some way of identifying a user. An idea for that '''could''' be that the respective user requests "ownership" via a button on the respective domain page. One of the editors comes along and sends a message with an activation key to the email address given as ADMIN-C (or whatever else is being decided). Once received, the user will have to enter that key on one of his personal pages and he now owns the page.

Yes, it would be a little risk if someone hacks the mail server, but that's the only one I can see.

'''Note:''' The request for ownership must be linked to the wiki user account (although the email addresses need not to match). The request must be valid only for a certain decent period. The request must be linked to the respective domain page as well so that no two activation requests can ever interfere.--[[User:Assarbad|Assarbad]] 01:32, 1 September 2006 (PDT)

==Table of Contents Feature==

Can you guys give me a function that automatically shows nested page links like say:

For every page that starts with 3DN [[Three Dimensional Networking]]

Find links

List page name with most link; name PML

List each link in PML with one indent; name PML1 -> n

For PML1, list each link with two indent; name PML1a -> z

etc.

So that it looks like:

Three Dimensional Networking

:Essential Unity

::Good and Evil

:::Matrix or Star Wars

:::Financial or Living Resources

::::Self-help Corporation

::Value Flows

::Whole System

:::Self-help Corporation

:Connections, bonds, relationships,bridges

[[3DN Table of Contents]]

[[User:David Braden|David Braden]]

:There's already a function to do this. This is how you do it:

:<nowiki>=First level heading=</nowiki>

:<nowiki>==Second level heading==</nowiki>

:<nowiki>===Third level heading===</nowiki>

:<nowiki>====Fourth level heading====</nowiki>

:...and so on. See [[User:Nathan/Sandbox]] for a visual representation. Please let me know once you've looked at it so I can have it deleted.
