Alameda city, located in Alameda County, California, in the United States, is a charter city, meaning that it's residents can choose to have the city governed in any way they see fit, voting through popular ballot. There are few cities in the US that can boast that degree of freedom! The city, located on Alameda Island, was originally part of a peninsula.
The city has great attraction for wind surfers and kite surfers, who are drawn to its stiff winds and its beaches. The city has two 'sister cities', Wuxi, China and Lidingo, Sweden. Both Lidingo and Alameda are island cities connected to the mainland by bridge or tunnel.
The Alameda high school boasts some famous alumni: Debbi Fields, founder Mrs. Fields Cookies, was a cheerleader at Alameda High School and Jim Morrison, Lead singer of the Doors, also attended the school.
