Comic books: action, adventure, thought bubbles

With heroes like Superman, Batman, Wolverine, Captain America and a host of others, comic books have become an icon of printed media. Creating worlds of fantasy or depictions of everyday life, comic books allow writers to convey their ideas both in written word and through artistically inspired images. Through their history comic books have also been known as serials, funnies and graphic novels. The initial comic books in the United States were sold in 1934, but outside of the states comic books have been found in Japan from as early as the 1800s.
