Flamenco is synonymous with Spain, but in fact it belongs to only one specific part of Spain - Andalucia - and to one specific ethnic group within that area - the gypsies.
In fact, some purists claim that only the gypsies have the duende - soul - to dance flamenco properly. That hasn't stopped flamenco spreading all over the world, and it is now danced by men and women of many nationalities.
Flamenco is still danced socially in Andalucia and some of the best dancing can be seen in late-night bars when gypsies "jam" spontaneously. However, it has also become a performance art, and different styles have developed.
Madrid is now a major flamenco centre. The classical flamenco style taught there is noted for its elegance, unlike the earthy gitana style of Andalusia. Nuevo flamenco incorporates elements of contemporary dance.
