Nederlands (aka Dutch)

Nederlands is the European spelling for the geological area of Holland (Netherlands). It can also refer to people of Dutch decent as well as people who live in parts of the world that were under the control of the Nederlands. During colonial times the Nederlands was one of the predominant seafaring nations which allowed it to place colonies in Africa, North and South America and in the East Indies and over time these colonies adopted the language of the Nederlands. To this day there are many Dutch speaking countries throughout the world whether in Holland itself or spread throughout former Dutch colonies.
