Suffolk is only 70 miles North-East of London but still has large areas of unspoilt countryside and areas of outstanding natural beauty. The fact that it is largely rural and yet so close to one of the major cities of the world makes it attractive to visitors and commuters.
Although agriculture remains important, service industries contribute over 20 times more to Suffolk's economy. Many of these service industries are high-tech, for example British Telecom has its main research and development facility at Martlesham Heath (just outside Suffolk's county town, Ipswich). Other large towns include Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft and Felixstowe (one of the largest container ports in Europe).
These are my favourite things to do in Suffolk (please feel free to add your favourites) :
1) Go to one of our many unspoilt beaches and have a fish and chip lunch.
2) Go to Newmarket, the home of horseracing, on a raceday (the July course is best).
3) Go to Minsmere, the world renowned RSPB bird reserve and get a guided tour.
4) Find a village pub!
