It was the year 1969 that Johann Egger established his company in Wartenburg, a small town on the outskirts of Munich, Germany. There he rented and renovated an old barn on the Marktplatz (town square) which at the time housed horses. His company resided there for 11 years. Initially, the business was established to import wood from Brazil and to sell it in Europe. Together with the Orders for wood, he would often send his customers a small token (a mineral, such as a fossil or quartz crystal group) of his appreciation. To meet the ever increasing market demand for minerals and gems, Mr. Egger also bought land and built an industry center in the Northeast region of Rio de Janerio, in Itaborai. Egger do Brasil Ltda. became quickly established. According to the language of the native Indian there, Itaborai means "beautiful stone." Since then, many different varieties of minerals and stones continue to be sorted, prepared, handcrafted and delivered worldwide. With more than 50 varieties and qualities of stone and a monthly production of approximately 30,000 kilograms, Egger do Brazil has become one of the leading mineral and gemstone companies in the world. While the mining, production and selling of stones in Brazil is overseen and directed from Germany, Egger is also very market-oriented and keen on developing new products to bring to the market place.
