This site is intended to be an informational resource for people with an interest in the countries that emerged from the break up of the Soviet Union. The site features daily news headlines and news stories related to the 15 former republics of the U.S.S.R. and/or related regions, for example, Central Asia.
In addition to news, the site also features useful information about each country such as, country history, population data, population statistics and trends, ethnic composition and the change in ethnic composition of each country since the break up of the U.S.S.R., geographic information, economic data and information and an essay on economic conditions in each country, basic information about each country’s government, government officials, and political conditions, information about the distribution of major world religions found within the territory of the former Soviet Union, background information and data on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), various historical documents from the three major periods: pre-Soviet, Soviet, and post-Soviet Russia, geographic, economic and historical information on each country’s major cities, covering 61 major cities in total.
The site is considered a work in progress and will be expanded with new and more information, more categories of interest etc. The sources of the information presented on this website are varied and include: the United States Department of State, the official website of each country’s government, and information gleaned through personal research in various libraries, with a considerable contribution coming from the libraries of Rutgers University.
