Located in College Station, the Texas A&M University – also referred to as A&M or TAMU – is a public research university that has a wide range of ongoing research funded by national agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, NASA, and the Office of Naval Research. Texas A&M also works in partnership with various state agencies, such as the Texas Cooperative Extension and the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station.

History

The Texas A&M University was established following the First Morrill Act (also known as the Land College Grant Act) passed by the US congress in 1862. The act states that “the benefit of this act, to the endowment, support, and maintenance of at least one college where the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts, in such manner as the legislatures of the States may respectively prescribe, in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life.”

The university officially opened on October 4, 1876 under the name “Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas.” It was only n 1963 when its name was changed into Texas A&M University, as a result of the institution’s expanded academic offerings. The letters “A&M” are retained to link to the university’s past, but officially have no meaning.

Academics

Texas A&M offers more than 150 courses through ten schools and colleges and about 18 research institutes including:

Reputation

Texas A&M is designated as a land-, sea-, and space-grant university – it is currently one of 13 universities in the nation to attain such designation. It was recognized in 1971 for its marine research and oceanographic research contribution; and again in 1989 for its participation in the Texas Space Grant Consortium and its commitment to space research by NASA. Texas A&M is also a senior military college with full-time volunteer corps of cadets. It also provides more commissioned officers than any other school with ROTC to the United States Armed Forces.

Facilities and Student Services

Texas A&M offers various student services such as food services, off-campus and on-campus housing, student computing, student counseling, financial aid, health services, bookstore, learning center, university police, writing center, box office, and transportation services. The university also formed “ATMentors,” a volunteer group comprised of faculty members, administrators and staff available during certain office hours to administer consultation sessions to students who request for it.

Some of the campus attractions include the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries, MSC Forsyth Center Galleries, Texas A&M Sports Museum, and Sam Houston Sanders Corps of Cadets Center. Currently, the Texas A&M is undergoing an “extreme makeover” worth about $300 million in construction.
