wikiHow - The How-To Manual That Anyone Can Write or Edit

wikihow.png
wikiHow is a wiki community whose mission is to build the world's largest and most accurate how-to manual. Taking the form of a standard how-to manual, the website currently (01-2010) has over 70,000 articles, most written, edited and maintained by volunteers and readers. These articles provide free and useful instructions on everyday life problems from highly useful things like changing a tire to more esoteric and fun guides like finding your way through a corn maze. Like many wikis such as AboutUs or Wikipedia, new articles are created daily, and existing articles are gradually improved over time by contributors.

Article structure

Articles on wikiHow are highly structured, with the intent of maintaining the how-to manual feel of the website. Generally, articles start with a summary of the idea or topic to be explained, followed by step-by-step instructions for the activity, along with any required items, warnings, tips and ingredients necessary. Related how-to articles and pictures are also included where applicable to help with instruction.

History and Additional Information

wikiHow started as an extension of the popular eHow.com website, and was spun off into its own site and domain in April 2006 when eHow was sold. Run with minimal "tasteful, non-obnoxious advertising," wikiHow is a hybrid organization which provides its information to anyone in the world free of charge.

Because wikiHow uses the MediaWiki engine as their back-end, it's used similar in use to other MediaWiki-based websites likeWikipedia or Wikitravel, but does have a variety of modifications to both the interface and structure.

Source of Income

wikiHow displays "tasteful, non-obnoxious" Google advertising to unregistered users. No advertising is shown to registered users. wikiHow is a Hybrid Organization.

Quality Content

wikiHow came out ahead after Google's Farmer Update search engine algorithm change in February 2011. This helps make it clear that wikiHow has quality content, unlike some of the content farms that lost traffic and search engines rankings.

Community Review

Google Ads appear "as if" they were part of the wiki content -- but they cannot be edited. This is a little "shifty".

They don't appear to be part of the wiki content to me, AND there is a cool function to hide them!! I think that is awesome! ~~ MarkDilley
