- Right from the start of our business activities for AEROSIL® fumed silica, we followed Degussa's philosophy for success to combine tradition and progress. In 1942 an idea became reality. Degussa invented the fumed silica as a replacement for carbon-black, that was manufactured from oil, to counteract the shortage of resources. At that time, the trade name AEROSIL® was invented and protected.
