The Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a member of the camel family. Alpacas are close relatives to camels, llamas, vicunas, and guanacos. These animals were domesticated as much as 6,000 years ago. They have originated from the high plains of the Andes Mountains in South America. There are two alpaca types: the Huacaya and the Suri. Alpacas are generally about half the size of llamas. They weigh up to 180 pounds. Alpacas produce one of the world's finest and most luxurious natural fibers.
