About the band
Jazz orchestras can offer the most varied, exciting and polished music from the jazz sphere to the public at large. Recent events such as Robbie Williams' album and "Pop Idol" demonstrate that big bands as popular today as they ever were.
Big Smoke is a collection of 20 accomplished musicians and vocalists, most of whom have been performing big band jazz since their childhood. As students at Oxford University, the personnel of Big Smoke won the 1999 BBC National Big Band Competition and l'Oeuf de Jazz festival of european student jazz orchestras held in Le Mans, France. At the same time the band gained an extensive reputation for providing professional-quality corporate events such as the "OK!" magazine Christmas Ball and over 30 Oxford balls, as well as more jazz-oriented events such as its regular slot at the Bull's Head jazz club in London and the Glasgow International Jazz Festival.
This same band, under the same musical director, is now based in London. Our commitment to musical excellence and absolute professionalism is stronger than ever.
