My interest in the healthcare field began in 1991. After receiving my education in Medical Assisting I worked for a Physical Therapist, Urgent Care Clinic, Pediatrician, attendant for a quadriplegic, and a Family Physician/ Internal Medicine practice.
In December 1997, I gave birth to my first son, Mitchell at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. I went into labor 3 1/2 weeks premature after my water broke. I had taken the childbirth preparation course, but really wasn't prepared for the awesome and scary experience of birth. I really didn't know much about the various interventions and didn't write a birth plan. Although I had about 15 family members present at my labor (many more than most of my clients choose to invite to their births), they really didn't know how to comfort me. The men were glued to the fetal monitors (they love electronics) and the women watched me from across the room with looks of pity and helplessness. Most of the women present had children of their own, but didn't know how to read my cues and just jump in with assistance. My husband is wonderfully supportive, but didn't know how to "fix" my pain. After 8 hours of labor I received an epidural and Mitchell was born one hour later and was 7lbs. He had a brief stay in the N.I.C.U. for fluid in his lungs, but is perfectly healthy today. He refused to breastfeed, instead preferring his bottle and pacifier. I was left wanting so much more out of my birth experience and vowed to make the next one different.
In 1998, I began helping Orange County family and friends with their births. I wanted to make sure they had the joyous birth experience they had always wanted. I was honored to be invited to help them during one of the greatest experiences of their lives. Many times it was the little things that mattered so much, like helping them relax during early labor, explaining how to take care of their perineum after the birth, or how to care for their sore nipples.
