Our goal is to publish the finest fiction in the world. Knowing that the market for literary fiction is adversely affected by the high cost of printing, we seek to combine the dignity and beauty of printed literary magazines with the cost effectiveness, efficiency, and accessibility of web publication.
Because we judge stories solely by literary merit, we publish a mix of new and established authors. We look for strong writing that offers our audience a window into worlds or lives they might not otherwise see. By strong writing we mean the effective use of language, good characterization, accurate use of the descriptive senses, a clear narrative voice, realistic dialogue, engaging conflict, and stories that reflect the complexity of the human condition; stories that are realistic without being moralistic. Ultimately, good fiction must mean something to the reader.
As editors, we feel there is an implied promise to our subscribers. While we cannot guarantee that you will like every story we publish, our goal is to make sure that there is at least one story in every edition that makes it worth your while to subscribe to Carve Magazine.
