Description

After the Bar Kochba Revolt (132-135 A.D.), the Romans recaptured the city of Jerusalem, and, according to their custom, divided the city into four "quarters," by building two large intersecting streets. At the intersection of these two streets was the heart of the city, the Forum, where most of the public activities and assemblies were held.

The main street was called "Cardo" and ran from north to south. Along the length of the Cardo there were shops and stalls, as this was the main market street and busiest street in the city

After the Six Day War in 1967, when the city of Jerusalem was reunited, the Old City fell under control of Israeli government, which lost no time in undertaking the project of reconstructing the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, including the excavation of the archeological treasures there, one of them being Cardo.
