Up and coming jewelry designer Kendra Burkett started Cherry Designs in 2002 after she graduated from Cal Poly. It was her knowledge of the children's apparel and accessory industry that lead her to focus on children's jewelry. After working in a children's boutique for nearly 10 years, she was tired of all the poorly made, improperly sized, and unattractive jewelry that was available to kids. She figured with all the wonderful jewelry that is available to women, children's was definitely the place to start. So she got going and, after approval from all of her nieces, she did a test run at the boutique that she had worked at for so many years.
With tremendous success at Hopscotch, she decided to venture out and start finding other stores. Next to come was Bambini's in Stockton, then Mudpie in San Francisco, and finally in December of 2003 she landed an account with the small chain This Little Piggy Wears Cotton. Kendra plans to grow the company, but limit it to approximately thirty retail locations nationwide, and of course the Cherry Designs Website. Kendra handpicks each and every store, making sure that they meet three criteria: they must sell quality merchandise, the store must be well maintained and merchandised (look really cute), and the staff must be friendly. If any of those components are missing we simply will not sell to that store. So you can be sure that any of the stores that sell Cherry Designs products come with a strong recommendation from Kendra herself, and will be a delight to shop at.
Keeping the business small is how the designer plans to keep the quality high and the designs unique. The jewelry is all handmade and designed by Kendra herself. The jewelry is very durable and made with only the finest materials. The designer uses only sterling silver and 14k gold metals. All beads used in Cherry Designs jewelry are top quality, including beautiful glass and hand-painted beads selected by Kendra herself. The beads are also very durable, so that if thrown out of a stroller or knocked off of a counter the jewelry will not break. The designer (although she has no children of her own yet) has three nieces and many friends that she uses to test the durability and likeability of her jewelry. Cherry Designs prides themselves on service and customer satisfaction.
