Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan is currently serving an unprecedented third term as the top elected official of Maryland's largest jurisdiction.
Duncan got his start in politics at an early age, going door-to-door with his mother during John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign. Although he is the only one of the 13 children to follow in his mother's Democratic-activist footsteps, the Duncan family has a long tradition of public service. Doug's father fled Nazi-occupied Europe, came to the United States, joined the Marine Corps and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. After a career in federal service, Doug's dad taught non-English speaking students in the Montgomery County Public School system. In addition to raising 13 children, Doug's mother worked for 27 years for the Montgomery County Circuit Court.
Doug grew up in the Twinbrook section of Rockville, Maryland, a working-class neighborhood, home to federal employees, teachers, police officers and firefighters. Upon graduating from Columbia University in three years, Doug worked for Montgomery County's criminal justice commission, and then spent 13 years in the private sector working in the telecommunications industry. In 1982, Duncan was elected to the Rockville City Council, where he served for three terms, and was then elected Mayor for three terms.
