WELCOME TO ETHIOPIAN ASSOCIATION IN THE GTA & SURROUNDING REGIONS ****** The Ethiopian Canadian Community in The GREATER TORONTO AREA & Surrounding Regions is Extremely saddened by the climax of upheavals in Ethiopia that have consumed the lives of more than three dozens, crippled hundreds and arrested thousands************As a part of Worldwide rally for Democracy & protest aganist Human Rights violatoion in Ethiopia, Ethiopians in the Greater Totonto Area, Ottawa, BC, Alberta.. Demonstrated on Major Canadaian Streets & Squares to aware Canadian Government, Canadians & International Community about current setauation in Ethiopia on October 2, 2005 ************Ethiopia Under Attack! Gunfire shots have turned Ethiopia's capital into a war zone. Businesses and schools are closed as shots are fired nonstop in many parts of the city as defiant city residents in Shola, Mekanisa, and Ferensai legacion and many areas erected roadblocks against security trucks. Mercato and Piazza still remain as tense as on Tuesday. Security forces meanwhile took over CUD offices on Churchill Road and Bole areas. Residents vowed protests would continue until "Our Leaders are released". More than 100 killed & 200 injured in Addis Ababa. Unrest has reportedly spread to outlying towns. We Call the Canadian Government & the International Community to stand beside the people of Ethiopia & Condemen the current dictatorial regim in Ethiopia, November 2, 2005 ******Security forces Killed 5 & wounded scores during foiled attempt to capture the young and charismatic leader of the powerful opposition CUDP Mrs. Burtukan Mideksa.****** security forces killed the wife of Addis Ababa Councilman Mr. Teshome Legesse while sobbing when her husband was being taken away to prison****** The government has continued its crackdown on members of the independent press and the Ethiopian Teachers Association. OVER 11,000 people have been detained out of which 4000 are women, a source said Saturday. Most are being taken to Dedesa, where death is imminent in the malaria-infested jungle about 700 km southwest of Addis. In Bahir Dar, three prison camps are packed with detainees. Families who want to claim the bodies of their loved ones are first asked to submit a written confirmation that the opposition CUD is responsible for the killings, and not the government. Your presence at the demonstration is equivalent to saving lives in Ethiopia ************ Saturday December 10,2005; from 1:00PM-7:30PM at OISE-University of Toronto Auditorium, Town Hall meeting organised by the Ethiopian Association In The GTA & Surrounding Regions completed with great success. The current Ethiopian Human Rights setuations & Civic Organizations issue Addressed & brifed by Dr. Taye Woldesemayat, poletical scientist & International relations expert, The Ethiopian Teachers Association President & Ethiopian Civic Organizations Leader: Hon. Maria Mina M.P. and Hon. Jim Karygiannis M.P. addresed Canadian Government firm stand regarding Human Rights & democracy in Ethiopia. They expressed their full support & comitment to practical actions: Human Rights Adovocacy representatives: local, National & International Media groups paied big attention to the meeting ******Saturday January 14, 2004 the Association hosted an all candidates debate & Town Hall meeting at 252 Bloor Street West U of T Auditorium from 2:30PM-6:00PM. Representative of the Conservative Party of Canada, Hon. Day, Stockwell Burt current Minister of Public Safety & Representative from the New Democratic Party of Canada Candidate MP Michael Shapcott were key figures and Stars of the Day. Their party platforms on Social, Economic and Cultural issues have been addressed & discussed widely. Present & feature Canadian International Forigen Policy issues have been hot spot of the discssion. The Gross Human Rights violations in Ethiopia comitted by current dictatorial regime and feature course of actions on this matter were also sensitive issues on the discussion. Ethiopian Community got full support from both parties. They expressed their full support & comitment to the practical actions to stand behind the people of Ethiopia regarding this issue. Ethical, with a high morale standerd and educative discussions were completed with great success. Community leaders & Media groups attended the event. ******Community EVENTS: International Womens Day celebrated on Saturday March 11, 2006 at the Ethiopian Association hall from 3:00PM-7:30PM****** On Saturday April 29, 2006 the Community Fundraising Event completed with great success; ****** Thousends of Ethiopian-Canadians & friends of Democracy started the Parade, A Demonstration of Remeberance from the Heart of Toronto & marched through Yonge Street, Universty Avenue & finilazed at Queens park on Saturday June 10, 2006 to raise the voice of voiceless Ethiopians living under dictatorial regime commiting gross human rights violations.. ****** Our 25-th Silver Jublee, 8-th Ethiopian-Canada Day Celebration & Ethiopian New year celebrated on September 9, 2006 at 80 Tycos Dr. *******WE WISH YOU A HAPPY NEW YEAR & MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!******
