Filaria Journal is an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online journal addressing the biology, infections, disease and control of filariasis, onchocerciasis and guinea worm.
Filaria Journal is aimed at the scientific community interested in filarial diseases in the broadest sense. It is the only journal that publishes exclusively articles on filarial diseases and, as such, aims to bring together knowledge from the different specialties involved in this broad discipline, from parasite and vector biology, diagnosis, clinical medicine, pathology, disease control, health policy, to socio-economic and environmental issues. Filaria Journal offers a rapid publication schedule while maintaining rigorous peer-review; this is achieved by managing the whole of the publication process electronically, from submission to peer-review to publication.
The filarial diseases of humans are unique in that they benefit from control, elimination or eradication programmes. Over the past two decades parallel biomedical research into the causative organisms and their vectors has enabled these strategies to be advanced. By providing electronic and open access to new biomedical research, Filaria Journal will help bridge the "digital divide" and facilitate education, research, communication and collaboration thus speeding the assimilation of research results into programmes. In turn this will help sustain and enhance the efficiency of these programmes, which will more directly bring the benefits of research to not only those afflicted by these diseases but the hundreds of thousands who are at risk from infection.
