Title

Greater Boston Track Club

Description

The Greater Boston Track Club provides a friendly, competitive, team-oriented environment to those who compete at nation, regional, and local levels. Financial support may be provided to teams and individuals to compete at major events. The club promotes events in track and field, road racing, trail running, and cross-country. A structured training program is provided in the form of team practices under the guidance of experienced coaches.

The Greater Boston Track Club continues to be a leader in the region's post-collegiate running tradition. The club was founded in the fall of 1973 when six local college graduates asked local coach Bill Squires to help them create a new running club for track athletes who wanted to continue running after graduation. The club achieved immediate success in the 1970s, including multiple national cross-country and road racing titles, placing four out of the Top 10 at the 1979 Boston Marathon, and scoring a record low 26 points at the national cross-country championships. Today, the club seeks to bring together athletes who want to train and compete in a welcoming friendly atmosphere. The athletes of GBTC range in experience from beginners to nationally competitive athletes. We are unique in that our club has athletes in virtually all of the disciplines including sprints, jumps, hurdles, throws, as well as road racing and the marathon.

The club has approximately 200 members who compete in local, regional, national, and occasionally international competitions. Examples of local competitions that GBTC participates in include the USATF-NE Grand Prix Road Racing Series, the New England Cross-Country and Track and Field Championships, and the Boston Marathon. We also send teams to the USATF national club championships in both track and field and cross-country as well as being an annual participant at the national recognized Penn Relays. The men and women won the combined 2005 USATF club national track and field championship, and both the women and men have recently won the Boston Marathon team championship.
