Gilbert Collection

Description

The Gilbert Collection Trust maintains the ongoing display of the late Sir Arthur Gilbert's extraordinary collection, develops special exhibitions related to the collection, and presents programs for museum visitors of all ages. A major goal of the Trust is to further Sir Arthur's personal interest in making the decorative and applied arts interesting, accessible, and enjoyable to the general public.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has played a key role in paving the way to open up Somerset House, one of the nation's greatest 18th century buildings, to the public for the first time. The support of the Heritage Lottery Fund has been essential in realising the new vision for Somerset House, bringing this splendid exhibition and event space, including the Courtyard and River Terrace, into public use.

"Sir Arthur Gilbert's gift to the nation of his important collection of decorative arts, combined with funding from HLF and the vision and dedication of the Somerset House Trust and Gilbert Collection Trust, has led to the rediscovery and creation of an exciting historic open space that will attract Londoners and tourists alike. Somerset House and the Gilbert Collection are among the major 'beacon' projects supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, as part of its major and lasting investment in the range and diversity of Britain's heritage which will be available to future generations and allow the enjoyment of a forgotten heritage treasure in the heart of London."
