FEMA: We Didn't Say Have FUN With The Money
Man, this whole article just puts your teeth on edge. According to the fine, fine folks at the GAO (Government Accountability Office), fraud and waste for disaster assistance provided to those affected by Hurricane Katrina and Rita last year could top 1 BILLION dollars. Why? One is FEMA management of the funds and the other is because people given the debit cards ignored the fact the money was to be used to "satisfy legitimate disaster needs." Check it out, some people had a "paaar-tay":
FEMA's cited as losing track of the cards, as well as not having a process in place to pick up when people registered twice for funds. They also housed prisoners for free and then the bonus: a Louisiana prisoner who listed a post office box as his damaged property and got $20,000. That's right, 20K for a POST OFFICE BOX.
