The company was formed from the merging of 17 pulp and paper mills in the northeastern U.S and acquired the Hammermill Corporation in 1986 and the Masonite corporation in 1988. It also acquired German paper manufacturer Zanders Feinpapiere AG and french paper company Aussedat Rey in 1989. Iinternational Paper produces various paper and pulp products like printer and copier paper and fluff pulp among other things. It supplies wood products to developers and retailers for the building and construction industry.

Stocks for International Paper were included in the Dow Jones industrial average from July 3 1956 to April 7 2004. It was dropped from the Dow Jones along with AT&T and Eastman Kodak. International Paper also owns shares with the Chilean company Copec. Its beverage packing division is being sold for 800 million to millionaire Graham Hart and will continue operations under the Evergreen label. The sale will eliminate a large part of IP’s business but will also help pay debts owned by the corporation.
