Description

About Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale

Mike Ragsdale’s professional history involves a number of fields, from education to business to politics. The common thread that binds this life’s work together is love of community and of his home state of Tennessee.

Mr. Ragsdale’s political career began in 1990 when he was elected to serve as Knox County Commissioner in the 5th Commission District. His public support won him a second term four years later, with nearly three-quarters of the vote. Mr. Ragsdale was elected to serve as Knox County Mayor in 2002. He ran unopposed for this seat in both the Republican Primary and the General Election—an unprecedented victory in Knox County election history.

Knox County has seen other milestones during Mr. Ragsdale’s term as well. Knox County received a National Association of Counties (NACo) award, a first-time honor for the County that was quickly followed up with the prestigious NACo “Courthouse Award” a year later. Only three of these awards are given annually to the country’s best government programs. The money that accompanies these awards have been put to good use in the community, establishing such programs as the Mike Ragsdale Scholarship Fund to help students with continuing education.
