- Midwest Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) is a group of eleven residency trained emergency medicine specialists. It is owned by the physician employees. We have had the exclusive contract at North Kansas City Hospital since 1968. We have grown from a 3 bed E.R. to a facility that is scheduled for completion in eighteen months with forty beds and a projected volume of over 50,000. Our volume is very well blended with adult and pediatric emergency services. Most of our pediatric emergencies are stabilized and transferred to Childrens Mercy Hospital, a premier pediatrics facility approximately 10 minutes south of us. We see a significant amount of true emergencies. We have no problem maintaining our skills. Of course there is the usual amount of out patient type problems. At the present time there is no distinction between urgent care and emergency room treatment and no urgent care facility on campus or in the vicinity. We are a level two trauma center. We are surrounded by interstates. The majority of our trauma is blunt vs penetrating. We have a very large industrial base with a rapidly growing middle and upper middle class residential population. Kansas City International airport is 15 minutes from our facility.
