In the 80's and 90's, it was appropriate to let mutual funds do your investing for you, with many funds posting gains of 15% to 30% per year in one of the greatest bull markets we have ever seen.
All of that changed in 2000. The NASDAQ, bolstered by the internet and technology sectors, reached a peak of 5,000 in March. In the sell-off that followed, "Buy-and-Hold" investors were hurt as their mutual funds declined in value with the fall of the NASDAQ, followed by the other exchanges.
Here is a rather typical chart from the NASDAQ - Valence Technologies. You can see that if you had bought this stock in January and held it through June, you would have sustained a 50% loss. BUT, if you had traded the moves in this stock, you would have seen a GAIN of 175%.
