Title

PHP Arena

Description

Before you understand a word on this site, it might help to know what PHP is. PHP is another programming language, like the various forms of C and Visual Basic and the many other programming languages out there. All programming languages have one common goal: Make a program to tell the computer to do something (Example: Some form of C made Windows to tell the computer to crash and lose all your data.) But PHP, Perl, ASP, ColdFusion, and a few others (Web Programming Languages) are different than C and Visual Basic - Web Languages enhance or add features to a website, not just your computer. For example: paFileDB adds a download system to your website. Instead of you having to create a bunch of HTML files for each download on your site, you install paFileDB, add data to its database, and it will dynamically create a page based on whatever download the user chooses. A forum is another example. Instead of users having to e-mail posts for you to add to the site, they fill out a form on a webpage, click a button and their post immediatley appears on the webpage without you having to do anything. If it wasn't for web programming languages, the internet would be the same way it was 15 years ago; plain web pages with no dynamic content.

PHP Arena was created in March of 2001 by four teenagers who all shared an interest in PHP. paFileDB was the first script on PHP Arena. It was version 1.0, had hardly any features and didn't use MySQL. Just a couple weeks later, paSQLnews was released. However, that script is no longer available for download because of its age, it was no longer up to date or secure and its creator, Dan, is now doing behind the scenes work with PHP Arena. The site continued to grow with the release of a couple more scripts and the addition of Matt, a.k.a PHP Alien, to the team. Now, with more visitors and more financial support behind it, PHP Arena is a growing site and won't be going away in the near future. You can also check out our very first site design here at archive.org. But don't worry, that ugly green color scheme will never see the light of day again, at least on our server.
