- It was between the end of the Civil War in 1865 through to about 1890. A legendary period of around 25 years, in an area spanning the vast reaches west of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Americans settled 430 million acres of land during this period while overwhelming the indigenous Native Americans in the so-called Indian Wars. Ten new states entered the Union, bringing the total number of states to forty-eight by 1912. Over the course of just a few decades commercial empires in mining of gold and silver, farming, and cattle emerged.
