Bullying

As a site that so happily cites their right to freedom of speech, I am sure they will not object to me writing an honest opinion of their site. It does nothing short of condoning online bullying. The operators of the site are happy to tell anyone who complains or asks to be removed from their site all about their freedom of speech and first ammendment rights yet under every e-mail is a long privacy notice to make sure that the person e-mailing them knows that although they have that right, you do not. There is no benefit to anyone other than the owners of this site who attract kids to the site to anonymously bash teachers while being served with paid advertisements.

A feedback tool

Primary and secondary schools are generally government run institutions and rarely ask for feedback on their performance. Concerned parents may call the school, they may join a parent/teacher organization, and they may attend school board meetings. However, these are individual actions which often do little to highlight serious ongoing problems - or bring to light those marvelous gems who so greatly influence the course of our lives.

RateMyTeachers.com provides the public with the means to aggregate both concerns and compliments and make them available to the taxpayer. Sure, it's possible for an individual to abuse their editing privileges. However, unconstructive reviews simply negate themselves, and the website provides the means to moderate and report inappropriate reviews.

My experience over the years with the more well known RateMyProfessors.com website has shown me that it's not all the difficult to sort through a few dozen reviews and distill from them a pattern which really does accurately reflect the teacher's performance. Given a choice, I've found this type of tool invaluable in selecting a teacher.

But perhaps that's the problem with public schools. Parents have virtually no choice. To me, that makes a website such as this all the more valuable. With scores of students and parents making the same complaints or compliments across multiple years, local school boards will now have the information and the motivation to kick-off the appropriate performance review.

If this website gathers an inordinate amount of negative reviews, we can't blame the website. It simply reflects the public's frustration over the stranglehold teachers unions have over the educational process, one that hinders a school board's ability to terminate a teacher's employment when faced with overwhelming evidence of incompetence.
