Description
My name is Daryl Collins and I am a Search and Rescue helicopter pilot with the Canadian Forces. I joined the military in 1989 (ROTP), graduating from the Royal Military College in St-Jean, Quebec. After getting my wings in 1995, I spent the first three years of my helicopter life as a CH-146 Griffon pilot stationed in Goose Bay, Labrador. In the summer of 1998, I began flying the H-46 Labrador helicopter stationed in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. Then in the summer of 2002 I was transferred to Central Flying School (CFS) in Winnipeg, Manitoba where I head up the Human Performance in Military Aviation (HPMA) Flight. In that job, I am responsible for the continued development, and implementation, of an Air Force-wide human factors training program aimed at aircrew (CRM), maintenance personnel (HPIM), and air traffic controllers (TRM). I have accumulated about 2300 hours so far (hours are at a premium) and I also currently hold my civilian ATPL-H license and instrument rating.
Since getting my Wings, I have become extremely interested in Flight Safety, Crew Resource Management, and Human Factors. In particular, I have done a considerable amount of work and research in the field of CRM. I am a Canadian Forces qualified CRM facilitator and also completed the FlightSafety International CRM Facilitator training course held in Houston, Texas. In addition to this formal facilitator training, I have attended the following courses/symposiums (as a participant): Air Canada CRM Course, Transport Canada CRM Course, Transport Canada Pilot Decision Making Course, 10th, 11th, and 12th International Symposium on Aviation Psychology (Ohio State University). I am about 3/4 complete my Masters of Aeronautical Science (specializing in Human Factors and System Safety) and expect to complete it within the next year or so.
