Stater Bros. Markets has been providing quality, name brand products to the public since 1936. The first Stater Bros. Markets was opened in August 17, 1936, by twin brothers Leo and Cleo Stater. During the Second World War, Cleo and Leo served in the Army Air Corps while their parents ran the business. They were later joined by their brother, Lavoy.
2004 saw the acquisition of Santee Dairies, a state-of-the-art dairy, which operates now under the name Heartland Farms. Stater Bros. was also awarded twice in a decade by Grocery Headquarters Magazine, “Supermarket Retailer of the Year”. In 2005, Stater Bros. made the Fortune 500 list for the first time, also being the first Inland Empire company to make it to the list.
Today, with annual sales of $3 billion, Stater Bros. is the largest privately owned supermarket chain in the heartland of Southern California, with locations in San Bernardino County, Riverside County, Orange County, Los Angeles County, San Diego County, Kern County and headquarters in Colton, California. With 162 full service supermarkets operating in six Southern California counties and employing 16,000 people, Stater Bros. has continued its legacy through its low cost and high quality products.
Communities:
Stater Bros. Supermarkets actively participate in improving the communities we serve through non-monetary donations that assist fundraising efforts of local non-profits. We do not sponsor individuals or make cash contributions.
In 2007 alone, we have assisted in fundraising programs in various causes. In May 2007, we successfully raised more than $340,000 for the American Heart Association and more than $95,000 for City of Hope in March. In February, we awarded $124,256 to 22 charities located in San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Kern Counties.
Through the Hometown Community Card, Stater Bros. supports fundraising efforts of qualified schools and nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve. We also offer store tours of local Stater Bros. Supermarkets for students in Kindergarten until 12th grade.
We have made major corporate contributions to:
- California State University, San Bruno. We are a major supporter of the Student Athletic Scholarship Program and the Coussoulis Sports Arena.
- United Way Chapters. We make annual contributions to the local United Way Chapter.
- Chambers of Commerce. We are a member wherever there is a Chamber of Commerce in an area we serve.
- Food Banks. Every year, we donate more than 2 million pounds of unsealable products to Second Harvest Food Bank in Riverside, and San Bernardino County Food Bank.
- Food for All Anti-Hunger Store Coupons and Holiday Canister Program. Our customers and employees donate $200,000 annually for this program since 1987, 90% of which is given back to local charities.

- Service Deli. Our service deli uses only the finest combination of meats, cheeses, and other party trays for your party needs.
- Bakery. We have a wide selection of baked goods, and even baked goods for your party needs. We also offer picture cakes for special occasions.
- Pharmacy. At the Stater Bros. Pharmacy, you will be served by professional and prompt physicians. We pride ourselves with the prompt service, the average waiting time being only ten minutes. More than just medicine, our pharmacies meet the needs of the communities we serve by providing safe and reliable health care services and prescription consultation.
