How effective is overseas aid in reducing poverty? This World Vision discussion paper examines the evidence and finds that aid, while not a cure-all solution, has had remarkable success in helping to create better lives and opportunities for millions of people in developing countries.
At the same time, improved donor practices can make aid even more effective. The paper looks at the steps required to maximise aid effectiveness, and spells out the specific changes needed to improve Australia's aid program. At least 100,000 children's lives could be saved each year if these changes were implemented.
The report shows that despite their geographical isolation, Australians are much more globally aware than citizens of other nations. Australians rank much higher than other nations in our concern for global poverty and believe action must be taken as a priority by our political leaders.
