Title

YWCA of Lethbridge & District

Description

In 1945, a committee consisting of representatives from women's organizations in Southern Alberta was struck to investigate the need for a residence for students and working women in the area. By 1949, a permanent Board of Directors was organized, resulting in the YWCA Lethbridge & District registering as a society in 1951.

Property was purchased at 604 - 8th Street South (location of present facilities) and renovations were started. The result was a thirty-five bed residence. Recreational activities and educational opportunities for all age groups were added to the list of YWCA sponsored events.

By 1977, the original YWCA residence was showing signs of old age and was unable to meet the growing needs of its services. In 1979, pledges were received and with additional support from Alberta Municipal Affairs, Alberta Parks and Recreation, a fond farewell was bid to the original building and in 1983 the present building opened for operation.
