Description
ABC.net.au is the online presence of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation -- Australia's national broadcaster. Along the same lines as the British Broadcasting Corporation, it is operated under a charter and funded primarily by government, however business ventures including a national chain of ABC Shops, subscription magazines and various book, audio, and video/DVD products contribute to its operating budget.
Historical Overview
The ABC began life in 1923 as the Australian Broadcasting Commission, transmitting radio broadcasts inherited from the National Broadcasting Service which in turn had absorbed a number of the larger commercial radio operations at the time, along with the nationalised Australian Broadcasting Company.
Television broadcasts began in 1956 in Sydney and Melbourne, and by the mid nineties the ABC's operations included six symphony orchestras, expansive production of radio and television programming, and a nascent multimedia unit.
In 1995 the ABC's online arm was launched, branching out by the mid 2000s to include extensive podcasting of a significant portion of all radio content, as well as 'vodcasting' of many TV shows.
