In parts I and II of his series on style in 20th century music, Blair Sanderson laid the groundwork for viewing style as one of, if not the, most imporant aspects of music from that period. Having last argued for the importance of conflict between established traditions and rebellious new ideas, he now dives into one of the thornier, and sometimes divisive, aspects of 20th century music: tonality -- or, more specifically, the beginnings of atonality and expanded tonal systems.

Our selective roundup of Rough Trade's first 100 singles and EPs continues with talk about a wide range of songs released within a span of several months that came out of England, Wales, Switzerland, Japan and the U.S. Though the label's early years are synonymous with post-punk and spirited European youths, this installment of our three-part, all-week feature also notes the contributions of Robert Wyatt, Mayo Thompson and James Blood Ulmer.

Notorious for their reckless live show, the bassist for the Riverboat Gamblers took a microphone to the mouth at a 2003 San Francisco gig. Ignoring the injury, he lost four teeth in the process and got through four more songs before almost passing out on stage from blood loss. Now picture that, but in the form of dirty, riotous, rock n roll songs with a gritty punk edge perfect for late-night, drunken sing-alongs. Say hello to Texas' Riverboat Gamblers.
