Calleva Outdoor Adventures

Description

MISSION STATEMENT

The word Calleva means "Where the Paths Cross." Our mission is to get people outdoors and to responsibly educate people in the outdoors, by providing a safe educational challenging environment that promotes personal growth, group cooperation and leadership skill through outdoor activities. We assist children and adults in realizing increased personal power, team and leadership skills, and appreciation for nature through adventure activities. We prepare each participant to reach goals that will enhance personal esteem and confidence. These tools can only lead to successes in and out of the classroom and a better understanding of self and environment for those willing to become educated in the outdoors.

HISTORY

The idea of starting a new camp was in the back of our heads for many years. We came from a family of camp owners and directors and felt that we had a different vision on how to run a camp. Implementing that vision took a leap of faith and a lot of help from family and friends to make our dreams a reality. Before we had a camp we needed to come up with capital, so in the fall of 2003 we implemented Nick's idea for a fund-raiser The Markoff's Haunted Forest! Looking back at those early years of Markoff's Haunted Forest, you could look around and see everyone screaming their lungs out for donuts and donating countless nights helping us raise money for "the calleva project". The summer of 1994 marked the first year of Camp Calleva, and with a whopping 15 campers (many of those are still a part of Calleva). Driving busses during the school year and trying to outdo ourselves ever summer became the normal life for all of us trying to get Calleva on its feet. Calleva found its feet and has grown, expanded, and evolved from year to year. Calleva has never been about sitting on our laurels, but about consistently looking at ways to mix things up and diversify. We have run camps from quilting to orienteering, Rock climbing to synchronized swimming, and everything in between. If a staff member wanted to try something, we were not going to hold them back. This enthusiasm to keep fresh made Calleva a leader to many other camps considering one-week programming, and adventure based programming. Our openness to new concepts and ideas allowed us to move towards year-round programming and in 1996 we launched Calleva School Programs with local schools and clubs. Calleva also made a move towards becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and has been continually working towards offering the best outdoor education in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. We have been working hard for the last 13 years getting youth and adults participating in outdoor activities. Calleva currently runs outdoor educational programs for over 60 schools including public, private, and special needs.

Since our early years, Calleva has expanded every aspect of our camping experiences. The 15 original campers has grown to hundreds going through adventure education. Calleva leads in offering outdoor activity camps that get campers participating in a progressive program building skills in a particular activity. Campers now have the ability to continue within their interest throughout the year and participate in programs with exceptional staff and quality leadership.
