All-Male A Cappella at Cornell University: Last Call in a Nutshell
Crazy! Cool! Off the wall! Wowed by the boundless energy of our performances, people often describe Last Call in these terms. Yet, that is only one facet of what Last Call is. We're a group that wants to give our audiences everything: we not only sing, but also dance, deliver stand-up comedy, and act out delicious random skits. You'll see us at arch sings, Cornell academic events, and our biannual shows, giving our all to the crowd. We're also a group that takes our music very seriously - back in 2002 we merited the award of best all-male group in the 2002 International Championship of Collegiate Acappella, and we continue to strive for musical excellence. But above all, we're just a bunch of guys who sing. We love to sing, and we love singing with each other. In the end, this is what Last Call is truly about.
Mission
Last Call aims to entertain the community with various exciting performances, and to recruit new members in order to continue the organization for years to come. Last Call is also a place where members and the group's alumni can interact and form social and professional relationships.
Facets of Last Call
Vocal
Last Call is very much about vocal quality and blend. Every song has its own vocal style unique to that song, because no two songs have the same feel, just as no two cars drive exactly the same. We think that if each song has its own vocal style, the audience will better connect to the message or feeling of our songs. Through this process, Last Call has not only entertained with popular songs, but has turned several unheard-of tracks into Last Call signatures we've grown to love.
Blend is also very important to Last Call. While almost anyone can sing loud enough to be heard in a large group, it is much more desirable in a cappella to blend with the other group members, so the overall sound is smooth, connected, and doesn't sound as though a bunch of divas are competing for a solo. In a cappella it is definitely true that the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.
Of course, it's not only how you sing, it's what you sing, and when you sing it. For example, if we were asked to sing the national anthem for the world-renowned Cornell football team, but didn't sing that at all, instead reverting to our tried and true Boyz II Men yodeling medley... this would be a bad idea. Last Call has a large, diverse repertoire spanning many musical tastes, from hip-hop to country, rock and roll to rap, disco to gospel and jazz. (Sadly, no yodeling.) But by traversing all these genres, Last Call is sure to please any audience with an ear for fun.
Comedy
To Last Call, comedy is almost as important as... music! Why, you ask? A cappella is much more entertaining if there are more than just good harmonies. At any Last Call performance, you'll see comedy in some form or another, whether it's incorporated into the songs, the skits, or our outfits. Comedy is especially key at our shows, where the music, the crazy wigs, and our audience's mysteriously feverish energy combine to give Statler Auditorium a party she won't soon forget.
