Newspaperindex.com aims at presenting the most important online newspapers, but only a few. We imagine our users are foreigners searching for reliable news from a certain country and maybe they want to read two or three versions of a story.
That is also why we rank English, German and other major languages higher when selecting
Sometimes we go through lists of the newspapers print circulation numbers to check if we have the most read newspapers and sometimes we use tools as Alexa.com and even Google page rank to get and idea how integrated the online newspapers are in their markets. We also look at how often the newspapers are updated, if they have a print version and we only accept sites that have at least some quality journalism that can be accessed without registration or subscription.
All decision are relative to the countries we are working on. North Korea for example has no independent online newspapers, they do not use Internet! So here we have to lower our standards considerably and accept the Japanese based propaganda machine Korean News.
