Our History

Open School BC's long history dates back to 1919 when the BC Department of Education opened the Provincial Correspondence School. Over the past seventy-five years, Open School BC has consistently played a leading role in the growth of distributed learning in this province. Today, Open School BC continues to support teachers and students with its print and online resources and services.

Who We Are

Open School BC is a cost-recovery organization specializing in the design and development of high quality educational materials. We are in the public sector, part of the Ministry of Labour and Citizens' Services, as a division of the Queen's Printer. Open School BC has expertise in content development, structured content production models (XML), instructional design, online educational delivery systems, educational technology, multimedia and publishing (print and online), project management, and consulting.

Open School BC also provides services in the area of online course management hosting and digital resource sharing. Open School BC has evolved into an organization that offers comprehensive services and a wealth of expertise in educational design, development, and delivery for a variety of sectors including K–12, the general public, and post-secondary.
