History

The company was founded in 1996 by Philip Anschutz, who owned the Southern Pacific Railroad at the time. During this year, Anschutz was involved with the installation of digital fiber optic infrastructure along the railroads to serve businesses with high-speed data and T1 services. As Southern Pacific Railroad merged with the Union Pacific in the year 1998, Qwest gained access to lay the fiber optic cable for the telecom work of the Union Pacific. This was followed by a series of acquisitions like SuperNet, LCI, and Icon CMT. This enabled the company to provide high-speed data to the niche market of corporate customers besides building a long distance customer base in residential and business segments. In 2004, Qwest emerged as the first Regional Bell Operating Company in the United States and began offering stand alone or naked DSL internet service that does not require the customer to have local landline phone service. Besides this, Quest also started offering a cable system in Phoenix, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Omaha known as Qwest Choice TV.
